  48. I have a few of Lew's publications, and they are quite informative.
  49. For a few bucks, you can get a rather extensive list of CBs and
  50. whether or not they can be modified.  (Many CBs, including most 
  51. Radio Shack CBs, cannot be modified)  He also sells manuals on
  52. how to perform the modifications.   I have a converted Cobra 148,
  53. and it works quite well.

  128. Good morning. It's Sunday the 24th of April and here is the GB2RS news
  129. broadcast, prepared by the Radio Society of Great Britain.
  130.  
  131. First the headlines:- Cheshire Raynet members save a boy's life; another
  132. RSGB Regional Meeting is scheduled; and we explain why the HF bands have
  133. been poor this week.
  134.  
  135. The May edition of the RSGB's magazine, Radio Communication, is due to
  136. be posted to all members early this week.
  137.  
  138. Amongst the news items in May RadCom is one concerning three Cheshire
  139. Raynet members who, whilst walking on Clwyd mountains on Boxing Day,
  140. came across an injured boy. They raised the alarm via the GB3MP
  141. repeater. The emergency services quickly responded and took the boy to
  142. hospital. He has now made a full recovery. The three heroes were Anthony
  143. Lewis, G6LBC; Graham Pemberton, G7NEH and Peter Baston, GW0PJA.
  144. Cheshire's County Emergency Planning Officer commented that the three
  145. "had undoubtedly saved Alfie's life" and that this was the quality of
  146. response that he had learned to expect of the Raynet group.
  147.  
  148. The RSGB has announced the date of another Regional Meeting. This one
  149. takes place at Brighouse in West Yorkshire on Sunday the 5th of June.
  150. These meetings are for members and non-members of the Society to meet
  151. Council Members, Society Officers and staff to discuss the workings of
  152. the Society and amateur radio related matters. For further details,
  153. contact RSGB Zonal Council Member Peter Sheppard, G4EJP, on 0964 550397.

  155. The recently contested North Ferriby Amateur Radio Society Two metre
  156. Race was won by Malcolm Cohen, G4XWA. At the Club's Annual Dinner,
  157. Malcolm was presented with the winners trophy by club Chairman, Frank
  158. Lee, G3YCC. The North Ferriby ARS Memorial Trophy is competed for on an
  159. annual basis and is in memory of past members.

  175. Well now that I have the tower cleaned up and ready, what antenna should I
  176. get for a HTX-202? I want to just hook the wire up when ever I am in the
  177. room.The tower is a old TV antenna pole with the antenna taken off. Once I
  178. get this antenna where do I put it? What if I want to add another one later?
  179. Can I just put a cross and put one on each side? Or can I put one a little
  180. bit farther down the pole?

  315. This is one of those rare times when I have to come down on the opposite
  316. side of the fence from Al. I don't recall it being mentioned in the
  317. original post, but I assumed from the wording that the party in question
  318. was a true cw operator and would be running 25+wpm. Can you imagine trying
  319. to click your jaws at that speed...or puffing on a straw at that speed. It
  320. would be terribly frustrating for a cw op to be restricted to the speeds
  321. that could be accomplished using such archaic methods.  Sorry, Al.

  351. This is a informal request to see if there is enough interest to warrant a
  352. new news group. The driving factors in this interest are, the apparent
  353. demise of the vhf list run out of Stanford University and the lack of any
  354. other news group for this area. The major unknown is if there is enough
  355. interest to set up a formal RFD/CFV for this area. 
  356.  
  357. While my primary interest is in the weak signal area, I have also noticed
  358. a general need in areas of ATV, Repeaters, FM, etc. So I envision the
  359. charter as being read very broadly, to include all areas of VHF/UHF/SHF
  360. interest, except RC, satellite, and packet (as they have their own forums)
  361.

  399. If I recall, the Icom 726 was about $400 more than the 725.  This
  400. is certainly less expensive than buying a separate rig for 6m.

  403. for an Icom 575H.  The HF-plus-6m rigs are great for getting your
  404. feet wet with 6m; if it ends up that you're not that interested in
  405. 6m, then you still have the HF capabilities of the rig.

  478. HF contest news now:

  480. The Helvetia (Swiss) Contest takes place this weekend and finishes at
  481. 1300 today, Sunday the 24th, after running for 24 hours. Use CW only on
  482. 1.8MHz, and CW and SSB on 3.5 to 28MHz but excluding the WARC bands. The
  483. contest is rather complex so participants are advised to consult the
  484. rules which can be found in the April edition of RadCom on page 19.

  486. The fourth in this year's series of RSGB QRS (Slow Morse) Cumulative
  487. Contests will take place next Friday the 29th of April from 1900 to 2030
  488. UTC between 3.540 - 3.580MHz. See April RadCom page 8, for further
  489. details and January's RadCom, page 83 for the rules. Novice licensees
  490. are particularly encouraged to participate as contacts with Novice calls
  491. are worth quadruple points.

  493. The Yeovil QRP Funrun Contest starts on Monday the 2nd and runs daily
  494. from 8 to 10pm local time until Friday the 6th of May. See April RadCom

  499. The first of seven RSGB 10GHz Summer Cumulative Contests takes place

  503. The RSGB 70 Centimetre Trophy Contest is scheduled to take place on
  504. Saturday the 7th of May, from 1400 to 2200 UTC. Starting at the same
  505. time is the 432MHz to 24GHz Contest which is a 24-hour event. See

  508. Special event stations this week include:

  510. GB2AMN, which will be aired by members of RAF Finningley Amateur Radio
  511. Society from the Newark Air Museum, from 10am to 6pm on the HF bands and
  512. two metres.

  514. GB2PCI will be aired during next Saturday the 30th from 10am to 4pm,
  515. from the Gosford Forest Park, County Armagh. The occasion is the youth
  516. activity day of the Presbyterian Church of Ireland. The station will
  517. operational on 40, 20, 17 and 15 metres SSB, with some activity on 2m.

  521. GB0XXV, will be used until the end of September to celebrate the 25th
  522. Anniversary of the Thornton Cleveleys Amateur Radio Society. The station
  523. will operational on HF, VHF and UHF, with G4ATH on 160 metres and G6GMW

  531. And now the solar factual data
  532.  
  533. The period from the 11th to the 17th of April has seen continuing
  534. magnetic storms, a mass coronal ejection affecting the south east
  535. quadrant of the sun, filament disintegrations, and an aurora. A massive
  536. restructuring of the sun's surface features is now taking place. The HF
  537. bands have been seriously affected. The only good news is that the very
  538. high levels of electron fluence have at last died down.
  539.  
  540. There have been some 'sub B' flares but details were buried under all
  541. the other events. The mass ejection which started on the 14th masked any
  542. black-outs and sudden storm commencements. The sun spot indices meaned
  543. at only 19, with general solar activity remaining very low. Solar flux
  544. levels have also remained low and averaged only 77 units. The 90 day
  545. mean on the 17th was 94 units.
  546.  
  547. The geomagnetic Ap index has varied from 'storm' up to 'severe storm'
  548. levels all the period. The mass ejection started on the 14th and
  549. continued through the 15th together with the disappearance of some small
  550. filaments. A magnetic storm commenced at 20.04 on the 16th raising the
  551. Ap levels to 33 units. Levels rose further to 67 units at mid latitudes
  552. by the 17th. At high latitudes levels went up to 130 units. The major
  553. storm took place from midnight on the 16th up to mid-day on the 17th
  554. which made it hard going for the GB2RS news service on the eighty metre
  555. band. Critical frequencies were down to only 3.4MHz with only the F1
  556. layer being detectable. The K indices rose to K9 over the 16th and 17th
  557. with levels of K5 and K6 on the other days. The Ap indices averaged 35
  558. units for the period. The state has been 'Mag storm mass ejection' most
  559. of the week.

  561. The aa indices, as supplied by the British Geological Survey for the
  562. period from the 5th to the 11th of April, gave daily averages of 64.4
  563. nanoTeslas about K4, but it was a very disturbed period, with many
  564. periods over 100 nanoTeslas; there was no quiet period. The X-Ray flux
  565. rose from A1.0 on the 12th up to A4.8 on the 17th. All the X-Ray
  566. activity was in the mass ejection area of the sun. The 'greater than 2
  567. Mega-electron volts' electron fluence has been very high for the past
  568. month with levels around 2.5 plus 9. However, on the 17th levels dropped
  569. to 1.3 plus 7 which is about normal for this time; it is hoped that this
  570. will have an effect on stabilising the HF bands, particularly for the
  571. more northern stations.

  573. I'll repeat the figures. Spots - 19; Flux - 77; Ap index - 35; X-ray
  574. flux - A2.8.

  578. Now the ionospheric data for Central France:

  580. The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Poitiers, as reported by Meudon,
  581. averaged only 5.5MHz. The 17th was down to only 4.3MHz, with the peak
  582. not being reached until 19.00 hours. There were long periods up to 9
  583. hours some days when only the F1 layer could be detected. The darkness
  584. hour lows averaged 2.3MHz with periods of spread F lasting through the
  585. early morning hours.

  587. I'll repeat the figures. Highs - 5.8MHz; lows - 2.3MHz.

  589. Now the ionospheric data for the north:
  590.  
  591. The F2 daytime critical frequencies at Ekaterinberg have been seriously
  592. affected by the magnetic storms, but levels were about 5.5MHz. The
  593. darkness hour lows were about 2.2MHz.
  594.  
  595. I'll repeat the figures: Highs - 5.5MHz; lows - 2.2MHz.

  597. And lastly the solar forecast:
  598.  
  599. This week, with the massive restructuring taking place on the sun, it is
  600. very uncertain as to what is happening. It may well be 2 or 3 weeks
  601. before the new features become established, but it is hoped that the
  602. magnetic activity will now die down. The best guess is that the more
  603. solar active side of the sun will be rotating away and magnetic activity
  604. will be at about 'unsettled' levels. Daytime ionospheric MUFs are
  605. expected to be more like normal levels, about 21MHz in the south. But
  606. the seasonal changes will make east/west circuits rather difficult. The
  607. northern levels will be down on this but much depends on the magnetic
  608. activity.

  613. Wednesday morning, the latest callsigns issued were in the G0 Uniform
  614. Uniform and G7 Sierra Hotel series, and Novice calls in the 2 0 Alpha
